Meet Juan Cuba

Juan Cuba is an organizer, advocate and leader with 18+ years of experience in the advocacy, political and philanthropic sectors. He is the son of immigrants and the proud father of a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old daughter.

Juan’s passion for social justice is motivated by his parents’ story. They came to this country when Juan was three years old in search of a better future. His mom was an airport worker and also took care of the elderly. His dad was a maintenance man by day and delivered pizzas at night. Watching them struggle with low wages that never matched the cost of living, a healthcare system that buried them in debt, and insurance companies that denied them coverage when they needed it most shaped his commitment to fighting for a fairer system.

At heart, Juan is an organizer. Building relationships, finding common ground, and fixing broken systems is what gets him up in the morning and the mindset he brings to every role he takes.

In 2017, Juan was elected Chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, where he flipped six seats from red to blue. Even more than the electoral success, Juan is proud of the times when he took on the political system. As Chair, he led an effort to hold the powerful Democratic State Attorney accountable for refusing to prosecute the correction officers that murdered Darren Rainey. He took on the Republican Mayor when the county began complying with unconstitutional ICE detainers. And, in partnership with Dream Defenders, pushed forward reforms that now prohibit the Florida Democratic Party from taking money from private prison companies. In his most recent work at the Impact Project, Juan directed $20 million+ worth of investments in issue advocacy campaigns that led to 80+ policy wins and in independent expenditures that led to over a dozen electoral victories.

Juan’s belief that injustice must be confronted, especially when powerful institutions use their authority to exploit and oppress the most marginalized, has led him to work focused on immigration enforcement, incarceration abuses, and political corruption—work that he is excited and honored to continue as the incoming Executive Director of Sheriff Accountability Action.
